Digital SAT & ACT Mastery

Standardized testing is a high-stakes component of college applications. Learn to choose the right test, create a prep schedule, and maximize your score.

SAT vs. ACT: Which to Choose?

SAT (Digital)

  • **Focus:** Reading comprehension, algebra, and geometry concepts.
  • **Math:** Contains a calculator and non-calculator section, testing problem-solving skills.
  • **Best for:** Students who excel in in-depth analysis and don't struggle with time pressure.

ACT

  • **Focus:** Broader curriculum content, including science reasoning.
  • **Pacing:** Much faster pace; success depends on quick execution of known skills.
  • **Best for:** Students with strong science backgrounds and those who struggle with deep reading passages but thrive under pressure.

Tip: Take a full-length, timed practice test for both the SAT and ACT. Your higher diagnostic score should dictate which one you commit to.

Optimal Prep & Testing Timeline

  1. Grade 10 (Spring/Summer):

Take your first official diagnostic tests (SAT and ACT). Use the summer to identify weak areas (e.g., specific math topics or grammar rules) and begin light, targeted review.

  2. Grade 11 (Fall):

Dedicate 10-12 weeks to focused preparation. Take your **first official test** in October or December. Analyze the results to plan your next steps.

  3. Grade 11 (Spring):

Take your **second official test** (March or May). This is your primary opportunity for score improvement before senior year. You can also take 1-2 AP exams.

  4. Grade 12 (Fall):

Take your final official test **only if necessary** (September/October) to finalize your scores before application deadlines (typically November 1 - January 1).
